Being an expat Michigander myself, I have the same feelings about this song. I used to tear up because the song is so sad. Now I tear up because it reminds me of home. I was five years old when this happened. I remember being afraid of the storm, and hearing the bad news the next day. It’s one of those things you never forget.

Same. Same. Same 😢 I was an 8th grader living in Harbor Springs part time. Every year after the wreck, close to or on November 10th, my friends and I would drive up to Mackinaw City with Diet Dr Peppers in our pockets (Labatts Blue after Nancy turned 18…). We’d stand on the shore in the dark at Old Mackinaw City Lighthouse Park and watch winter rile up the waves to a roar. As long as we could stand it we’d face the freezing gusts, spray, and often sideways snow. This made us incredibly sad and very cold, which was the point. It gave us a way to tell the sailors we were sorry and horrified this horrible thing happened to them. It was cathartic, reckless, and dumb. If I still lived in Northern Michigan I’d be doing it to this day.
